Tanya Campbell, owner of The Whiskey Barber Salon, is preparing to open her business in the State College borough, with a planned launch in spring 2026. A resident of Pennsylvania Furnace, she brings 17 years of experience as a men’s hair stylist and salon manager. Drawing on her passion for relationship-building and attention to detail, Tanya developed a vision for a high-end grooming space where clients can relax, feel confident, and experience a level of care that reflects the values she brings to both her work and community.
Starting the business came with challenges, particularly in translating her vision into the financial components required for a strong business plan. While Tanya had a deep understanding of her industry, building financial projections and organizing them into a structured format was outside her comfort zone. Finding an affordable location also proved difficult, as she had been searching for the right space since 2014. Despite these obstacles, she remained committed to her goal and ultimately secured a location within the historic building that houses the Scholar Hotel. With the right support, she knew these challenges could become opportunities for growth.
To navigate the startup process, Tanya turned to the Penn State Small Business Development Center (SBDC). With guidance from her business consultant, Tom Keiffer, she refined her business plan, developed detailed financial projections, and strengthened her approach to funding opportunities. Regular meetings provided accountability and reassurance, helping her stay on track and confident in her progress. In addition to the SBDC, she utilized resources such as the Penn State Dickinson Law Entrepreneur Assistance Clinic for help establishing her LLC and collaborated with students from the Penn State Smeal College of Business to enhance her human resources policies and workplace practices.
The Whiskey Barber Salon is expected to create up to 12 jobs and will contribute to the continued growth of downtown State College. Tanya successfully secured a Downtown State College Improvement District grant, supported by the financial projections developed through her SBDC consulting. Positioned as more than a traditional barbershop, the salon will combine professional grooming services with an upscale, relaxing environment inspired by classic barbershop traditions and whiskey culture. A soft opening is anticipated in spring 2026, with a ribbon cutting ceremony to follow.
For Tanya, entrepreneurship represents an opportunity to build a business that reflects her values while making a meaningful impact on both employees and the community. She is committed to creating a workplace where employees feel valued and supported, leading to stronger relationships and a better work-life balance.
